Summary VAMC Coatesville is seeking applications for a General Practice Dental Officer to performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures within its Dental Service Line. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet theBasic Requirements:
o as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement o Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met o Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation o Basic Requirements:
1 o Citizenship o Citizen of the United States o (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.) 2 o Education o Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry o The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed o Approved schools are:
United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed o Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence o 3 o Residency or Comparable Experience o Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients o 4 o Licensure and Registration:
Dentists (Except Residents) o Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of II-G3-1 November 20, 2017 VA HANDBOOK 5005/93 PART II APPENDIX G3 Columbia o The dentist must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure o Residents (Independent and Integrated Programs) o Graduates of approved United States and Canadian schools of dentistry must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or, for integrated programs, meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes o The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active current licensure o Physical Requirements o See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 o English Language Proficiency o Dentists, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C o 7402(d) and 7407(d) o Preferred
Experience:

No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Responsibilities The general practice dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. All staff dentists shall:
Annually develop and evaluate professional and personal goals. Establish and maintain professional relationships within the Dental Service and with other services and facility management, which result in improved patient care and facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care. Demonstrate sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative The General Dentistry dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. General Dentistry is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, lesions, and anomalies of the teeth, alveolar processes, gums, jaws, and associated structures. Diagnosis or treatment may include all necessary related procedures as well as the use of drugs, anesthetic agents, and physical and radiographic evaluation. Privileges include diagnostic procedures, restorative dentistry procedures and routine procedures within the areas of prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery. Initial granting of privileges will be based on previous credentials, training, and clinical experience. Subsequent renewal of privileges will also take into consideration OPPE outcomes. Duties and Responsibilities of the Dentist include, but are not limited to:
Prescription and injection or oral administration of medications including antimicrobials, analgesics, preventative medicaments, local anesthetics. Restoration of dental caries and dental fractures. Fixed Prosthetic restorations (crown and bridge), including dental implant supported crowns and bridges. Endodontic (root canal) non-surgical treatment, filling, and post and/or core placement for restoration. Oral surgery including biopsy, extraction, osteoplasty, soft tissue alveoloplasty, placement of single, root-form endeosseous dental implants. Periodontal treatment including scaling/root planning, gingival and periodontal flap surgery. Removable prosthodontic treatment including dentures, partial dentures, relines, occlusal guards, splints, sleep appliances. Fabrication of complete partial dentures. The Dentist must maintain his or her professional qualifications, participate in customer service training, computer training, and attend to mandated medical center training, including BLS.
