Lead Police Officer

As a regular and reoccurring part of the position's assignment, the Lead Police Officer is assigned over a team of three or more police officers engaged in maintaining law and order and protecting life, and property, and individuals who frequent VA facilities and jurisdictions. Ensures work assignments of police officers on the team are carried out. Distributes and balances the workload among teams and shifts. Monitors and keeps track of the status and progress of work and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervising officer on problems encountered. Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and maintains records of work accomplishments. Advises and assists police officers on preparing reports involving security violations, misdemeanors, accidents or other incidents. Gives on the job training to new police officers; reports to the Supervisory Police Officer on the progress of new employees. Keeps current knowledge of changes in procedures, policies, directives, court decisions and other guides and monitors compliance by assigned Police Officers. Instructs team members in specific task and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies as needed. Obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up. Reviews work to see that the supervisor's instructions have been met. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standard. Approves leave for limited duration. Monitors working conditions to facilitate safety in the workplace; informs employees of available services and activities. Resolves informal complaints by employees, and refers others to the supervisor. Provides recommendations to supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees, and on behavior problems. Provides information to the supervisor as requested concerning promotions, reassignments, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs and other duties as assigned. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-6) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques; experience that may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments, delegating and assigning workload; providing instruction, training and guidance to other police officers in law enforcement tactics, weapons, force methodology, crime prevention, etc. and record keeping. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:
Good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Must possess emotional and mental stability. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. Moderate to arduous physical exertion such as the ability to run, climb multiple stairs, lifting disabled or injured individuals, crawling, crouching and standing for long periods of time. The incumbent, on a recurring basis, is required to use his/her physical ability to restrain violent person(s) using unarmed defensive tactics. Along with the physical demands of traditional law enforcement activities, the incumbent may provide hands on training in various topics in firearms and defensive tactics. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
